Need current mothers thoughts

Ok, so this may be weird, but I have this thing with breast feeding. It kinda creeps me out. Actually, being pregnant kinda creeps me out too. Knowing that something is growing inside of me, feeding off of me for survival... Same with breast feeding... Knowing that someone is eating me (more or less) for their food and nourishment. The whole thing just weirds me out.

With that being said, I understand that breast milk is very good for babies. I am considering still pumping everything for my baby that way he still gets those nutrients. But, how much would I really get him before we have to supplement with formula? Does it make sense to get a nearly $300 pump to give this to my baby if I'm constantly supplementing with formula too? Especially once the baby starts to eat more than 2oz at a time... How much should I be expecting to provide? We're trying to decide if it makes sense to go this route (or renting a pump first) or if we should just skip it all together and go the formula route.

Thoughts? Know anything I should be prepared for?

I am not going to comment on this, not really. I have some strong feelings on the subject, and I don't want to shove my views onyou. :)

As far as if its worth it, don't get the $300 pump. Lansinoh has a double electric for $150. I have it, love it and have no issues with it. Check Target, BRU and BBB.

As far as if its worth it to even try breastmilk first,I going to censor myself, since I am a breasfeeding advocate. Every ounce of breastmilk is beneficial.Even if you stop at six weeks, thats six weeks that your baby has exactly what he needs nutrionally and six weeks longer that he is protected by your immune system.

I hope that you will at least try to breastfeed before you give up; it isn't nearly as weird as you expect. :) And that's all I'm going to say on the matter.

Its a very personal choice and one that only you can make, but I would at least TRY to breastfeed if I were you, ad then if its not your thing at least you can say you tried. But then again unless you plan on putting 100% into it you might not get very far.... Breastfeeding is hard work and something you have to be truly dedicated to!

I have done both, and while I do think breast milk is benefical I am all for formula feeding as well (M has only been formula fed and Kay was only breast fed for a few short weeks) and I love having the freedom with formula (not having to pump or feed every few hours). BUT I also think breast feeding is a wondferful thing if it works for you! Thats the key..it has to work for you. Your baby will be fine either way!

Good luck with whatever you decide. and I think its weird that you think is weird to be pregnant : ) so I guess we are all a bunch of weirdos!

I obviously don't have experience breastfeeding yet but La Leche is a great resource. There is a lot of great info in their FAQ section:

Rent a pump from the hospital first, for a month, see how things go, then invest in a pump! That is what I did and am soooo thankful, breastfeeding ended up not being my thing and we went to formula. I was happy that all I spent was $50 on the pump rental for 1 month, I just took it back and that was it. You buy a pump, your stuck.
